After having a bad experience with Dell not seemingly wanting to take a load of money from me for a laptop and then the normal Anitivirus, Adaware, Malware, Spyware etc etc updates, I decided to do some research on Apple Macs so after an awful lot of listening to PodCasts and watching VodCasts reading mags etc etc, I thought enough is enough I want to use my machine not keep administering it.
So I looked at getting a Mac. Now not being able to spend a load of money on something that I wasn't sure I'd get on with I bought a 2nd hand Mac Mini 1.25 ghz 40Gb 256 Gb Ram and after upgrading to 1Gb Ram, I'm not scared to get inside my machines you see.

This page has been produced using the Mac, and so far I'm loving it.

So here are my experiences and if any of it helps then great.

Bought my MacMini from Ebay be careful if your not an experienced PC user or an experienced ebayer!

I reinstalled the OS, a clean install to clear the previous owners data, which had pretty much been done apart from accounts been cleared.

Purchased 1GB Ram from Crucial and upgraded, there are lots of vid's showing how to do this but be brave...

Now for the fun part installing and getting to use that great software

1) Reset my Homepage in safari, you'll find it in Safari Preferences General, visit the other tabs for other slight adjustments. Like turning on Tabs!

2) If your using a mighty mouse set the right click button don't moan about it do it, I know it doesn't look like it has two buttons BUT IT HAS honest.

3) Where is the # key, well that was my first frustration oh by the way it's alt + 3 I'll have to see if I can move it! As I use the hash key in some of my passwords!Snapshot alt 3 to #

4) I installed Firefox, I use it in windows and it will help in my transition! Won't it. Now this is where things got different, the download was fine but then I got a popup which doesnít give much of a clue and two items left on your desktop. OK what now, well search the web, we are all too lazy for that and as I am pretty confident I experimented. And having watched a couple of videos some time ago I tried clicking on the Large Firefox Icon and dragged it to the Apps folder, hey guess what that's just what the popup shows ahhhhh dum me. Then I just dragged the left overs to the trash can, because highlighting an item and hitting the delete key doesn't work, well not yet! Hey I just don't care!

5) This brought me to renaming the pictures I'd grabbed I, being a windows user right clicked it, I'd enabled right click so it must work right, wrong, now there maybe another way but the explanation went thus, Click on the file's icon or name once and press Return!

6) Oh the screengrab I heard when listening to some podcasts before getting my Mac was Apple key + Shift + 3 for a complete screen grab, or Apple key + shift + 4 to use the mouse to highlight a section. Might be useful if you need to send a screenshot to someone for help!Picture 4

7) Now if you want the Program (in this Firefox to appear in the dock each time you boot up then right click it, you can also do a right click action (if you donít have a mighty mouse) by pressing ctrl and at the same time clicking your mouse, this brings up the submenu, which gives you the option of locking to the dock, it also shows a few other options also.

8) So I made my Firefox to look similar and added some of my bookmarks from Windows, now there are ways to synchronise these and Don McAllisterís Screencastsonline will show you how to use one of these progs, I wanted to start clean and so only choose a few bookmarks.

9) Now how much space have I got left, OK open Finder and you should be able to see at the bottom how much space avaialbe, easy.

10) OK what about Task Manager, well OSX doesn't exactly have the same but I found again after I had been listening to (frankly hundreds) of Podcasts, only because I just enjoyed listening to them, and it seemed that some information got through LOLz. Go into Finder Applications (referred to as Apps) Utilities and find Activity Monitor or type Activity Monitor in the spotlight app (top right of your desk top, on the bar. Activity Monito gives you a lot of options as there was in Task Manager plus more, go experiment.

11) So that damn chime when the system starts up I don't have a problem with the boot post on my PC because it says beep Iím OK, but the chime is too load and tooooo long. Now the only reasonable option I found was an app to turn it down or off, well the volume didnít work so I turned it off, but hey if I could just change it to a quieter beep then that would be fine. I do not want to change the volume control everytime I shut down. Come on apple ìit just worksî it just gets annoying! OK found a little utility to turn it off called StartupSound.prefPane from Arcana. Now come on apple surely you could have done that!

12) Real Player if you listen to the BBC you'll need to load it!

13) OK Photos now this is starting to get get a little more like hard work. But hey I didn't think it would all be plain sailing did I.

14) OK so you get a pop up giving you a yes/no option in windows you can use tab to move to the options, well with OS X hit the first letter of the option you need, if the wrong option is highlighted. So below press either M to move to Trash or C for Cancel or K to keep or for this option enter as that is the highlighted option..
